Marcus Dearle’s Tatler Address Book Article – Infertility and Relationship Breakdown

Senior Partner, Marcus Dearle, has written an article featured in Tatler Address Book’s Expert’s Corner.

Continuing our Family Law Risk Advisory (FLRA) series of articles, Marcus discusses the connection between childlessness and relationship breakdown – and the social stigma of infertility – a subject that is rarely discussed.

He says:

“Infertility difficulties are a regular cause of relationship breakdown and divorce.”

“For those unable to conceive or who choose to live child-free, the emotional and social consequences can be profound. Depression, anxiety, and a sense of social isolation amongst women who find themselves in that position are common. The emotional toll on men in relationships when facing infertility is also profound, yet frequently under-acknowledged.”

Quoting Oscar- winning actress Michelle Yeoh:

“It shouldn’t be imposed on you just because you are a woman [that] you must have a child.”

Marcus remarked:

“We need to reframe the narrative of what it means to be a family or single – that some people may be happier without children and that those without children can play a positive role in society.”
